FAQ's

Okay, I'm Interested in joining, what are the costs?
Great! We're looking forward to helping you to be the very best you can be and joining couldn't be simpler. Head down to your local Dojo (which you can find on our dojo locations list) and have a chat with the instructor. Did we mention your first class is free?

We also provide family discounts! The more people from one family you have training with you, the cheaper the class fees!

Single family member: £6.50

You, and another family member : £5.50 per person
You, and two family members +  : £.4.00 Per Person

Also, are you a member of the armed forces or emergency services? If you are, remove £2.00 off your training fee! This discount however only applies to you.

We also allow lesson bookings in blocks of ten for £30! You save £35 on those lessons!

Please note that family discounts are only applicable to direct family members only.

What do I need to bring?
If a representative of the club has visited you and signed you up from home, bring along your welcome pack and the free training sessions coupons you should have been given inside the pack.
If you haven't got these, there's no need to panic! Come on down to a class and chat to the instructor.

When attending your first class, please bring a drink with you and some loose clothing that you can move in. Make sure to pack a sense of humour too!

I've never done martial arts before, is that a problem?
Not at all. From complete beginner to experienced veteran, you can come to an Akatsuki-Ryu class and expect respect and patience is shown to all.
"Every journey starts with a single step"

Do you teach children?
Children are our future. We train children from age 6+ due to the nature of our Karate system.

How does grading work?
Grading was introduced in order to tell experience. When you start your journey with us, we'll offer you advice and guidance in your training not just to increase your chances of grading, but to improve you as a martial artist. When grading in Akatsuki-Ryu, there are plans in place for how long it should take you to achieve each belt, however all in all, Akatsuki-Ryu have a grading system close to traditional Japanese grading, in which your technique and execution is ranked, and if deserving, the appropriate belt will be awarded.

Gradings are normally scheduled at the end of every month and the grading fee is £15 to cover administration. This also includes the class fee and insurance costs for the event as well as the belt cost. At the end of the grading, you will be awarded your new belt and certificate and be ready for the next step.

How long does it take to get a black belt?
This is one of the most common questions asked in the martial arts field. Some martial art schools, you could be awarded a black belt after three months of training. In Akatsuki-Ryu, and many other martial arts styles, it can take 10+ years to achieve the coveted black belt. This does not however mean it will take 10 years to achieve. Belts in Akatsuki-Ryu are awarded on skill level.

Is black belt the end?
No. Many people believe that when you achieve black belt, that's the end of the journey; however, you have several grades past black belt from black belt, to 1st dan, 2nd dan and onward.

I have a medical condition, can I still train?
Of course. Akatsuki-Ryu does not discriminate against any medical condition and is in fact, welcomed in our style. Just make sure to tell your instructor so they can be aware of it!

How fit do I need to be?
It doesn't matter. From enjoying eating pizza every night of the week to hardcore gym fanatic, We start training you to increase fitness from the moment you step into our dojo.

Are you a sport karate?
We are looking at hosting tournaments as the club expands and gets larger throughout the country and hopefully we will be able to expand internationally as well. This will open up the chance to compete at not just regional level, but national and international as well.

Success! Message received.
